THE SILENT ERA, 1888-1929

By: kenji

Street Angel (Borzage)

Essentials, not just favourites. By year. Apursansar has already done an excellent list of his favourites, into the 30s, but i thought we could do with a compendium-type list too. I’m now going back to Louis Le Prince’s pioneering films in Leeds in 1888, rather than the Lumieres’ paying cinema presentation of 1895. See also RRegan’s list Silent Bob

My favourites:

Sunrise
The General
Metropolis
Man with a Movie Camera
Battleship Potemkin
Nosferatu
The Gold Rush
Sherlock Jnr
The Chess Player
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Street Angel
Vampires

the great early pioneer Alice Guy-Blaché

The Land Beyond the Sunset (Shaw)
Bout de Zan Vole un Eléphant (Feuillade)

The Life Story of David Lloyd George (Elvey)

I noticed Futagawa's "Orochi" on your list (of films not on the site), and have to agree wholeheartedly. I saw this last night with a genuine score and benshi narration and it was quite an incredible experience. A gorgeous film and a beautiful mix of comedy, action, social commentary, and tragedy (and the mix of those gorgeous tracking shots... it was almost like a Kurosawa almost thirty years before "Seven Samurai"). Your list overall is superb, by the way, but I wanted to comment on that singular film.

one of my favorites, though not in the database is WHEN A MAN LOVES ('27) - Alan Crosland - with John Barrymore, Delores Costello and Warner Oland... well worth the viewing, i feel.

The range of your viewing is, as always, impressive. I'm curious about the 18 you haven't.
