I'd like to suggest Rosa Luxemburg and Barren Lives.

Great list but we do need more variety. The Hawaiian, Filipino and Indian matters have to be thoroughly explored and I hope to see more films being added concerning the Byzantine Empire and the neighbouring lands of its then era.

Quite right- with lots of lists on the go, i've not quite had the energy to concentrate on the possible additions here.

I would recommend adding Quilombo, 500 Years Later, and Che. My favorite list I've seen on Mubi thus far though.

I'm glad you like the list and thanks for the suggestions. I'll have to see Quilombo. Just the sort of addition i was hoping for cos i feel the list is lacking for so many countries and periods. Of course it's quite a hard task!.

FYI, there is a 1959 film about Hannibal called, oddly enough, Hannibal. It stars Victor Mature and was partly directed by Ulmer. It's not bad in the enjoyment sense and has some worthwhile qualities, but it's sort of a Hollywoodesque take on the subject, going for the drama and excitement foremost, even though it was filmed in Italy. It certainly wouldn't be considered a great film or be to everyone's taste, but I enjoyed it well enough.

The Battle of Algiers is already on, and La Commune is just the sort of thing i was wanting as suggestions. I'm mainly concentrating on films based on real life cases, which is why i picked Heavenly Creatures, but with a small number of fictional films that can stand for/epitomise certain events and periods

I'm not sure if it would fit your criteria for this list but how about Memories of Underdevelopment, Coach to Vienna, The Battle of Algiers, La Commune Paris 1871, and The Red and the White? I'm curious as to why you picked Heavenly Creatures though, hehe. Great list :).

ah you're back as yourself, i prefer to a line. Ha yes it did occur to me, and Love and Death, i may yet do my own chronology of world history here, but it would take just a little research

Where's Mel Brooks' History of the World? Hahaha

Jerry, Rossellini is useful for this list but i ws also wanting more from Eastern Europe which is under-represented as are many parts of the world, and i'm not sure about including period fiction even if more "truthful" than some "histrical/factual" based films. it's actually proving quite a hard list.

I would suggest Hou Hsiao-hsien's Taiwan trilogy.

Rossellini filmed most of the high points of the history of Europe on his own.

I'm considering whether to include historical fiction to add to fictionalised/glamourised fact-based films

This is an excellent idea for a list! The only thing offhand that comes to me is, perhaps, Satyricon...
