A genius in youth

By: Malik

A list of directors who were young and came out the gates swinging with great-classic films. Feel free to suggest anyone.

The only criteria is the vague definition of great (as in the particular film, not necessarily their entire filmography), the fact that the directors must be young, and I’m restricting it to just debut films currently. No one over the age of 29 please (there are certain exceptions like delayed film releases or if a birthday has passed right before release). I will probably lean towards feature length debuts for the most part. There will exceptions for those that either died young, had a short film(s) that was incredible well received, or special cases like Manoel de Oliveira who have a career transcending nearly the entirety of cinema.

Louis Malle – 26
Glauber Rocha – 25
John Singleton – 23
Peter Watkins – 29
Steven Soderbergh – 26
Agnes Varda – 28
Martin Scorsese – 25
Nelson Pereira dos Santos – 28
Jean-Luc Godard – 29
François Truffaut – 27
Djibril Diop Mambéty – 28
Sergei Eisenstein – 26
Stanley Kubrick – 25
Jean Vigo – 29
Roman Polanski – 29
Mário Peixoto – 22
Luis Buñuel – 29
Bernardo Bertolucci – 21
Orson Welles – 26
Samira Makhmalbaf – 18
Manoel de Oliveira – 22
Andrei Tarkovsky – 29 (released 2 days after 30th birthday)
Jacques Demy – 29
Andrei Konchalovsky – 29

I guess it could be argued that Alonso has done better since, but I like his debut feature quite a bit: 'La libertad'. Perhaps one you might want to take a look at. I believe he was 26 at the time.

Technically, Roman Polanski's first feature was KNIFE IN THE WATER when he was 28/29, or at least I think it was his first. He'd made many shorts prior, but I suppose that's okay for this list per Vigo's inclusion of L'ATALANTE. Bertolucci made LA COMMARE SECCA as a debut film when he was 22 or so, with a script by Pasolini. Jacques Demy made LOLA when he was 29/30, his first feature. All this is contingent on my very sketchy handle on math.

Mário Peixoto made "Limite" at the age of 22. It's widely regarded as the greatest Brazilian silent film.

Bunuel was born 1900, so Un Chien Andalou makes it, L'Age d'Or maybe not
