Thank you for listing Chris Holmlund's book! I had the great fortune of having her as a professor/secretly declaring her my mentor and she is a film goddess. Anyone interested should absolutely check out her book on American independent cinema as well as American cinema in the 1990s. My hero!

A very thorough and thoughtful list, thanks. I have not seen a list this good on this subject before, the real indie cinema of America, great! now I just have to pick a few and explore.

Thanks Duncan! Todd Haynes is already represented with Safe. (Note: I use the criteria of only one film per director) Bottle Rocket, Wes' short film (1994) I could add if it were in the database, thanks for the suggestion tho!

Hey Grey, I love the list! (I actually wrote my thesis on American independent film, and it's a topic near and dear to me). Can I recommend for inclusion Poison and Bottle Rocket? The latter I find very interesting, because it was ignored in the Tarantino-heavy age of 1996, but now looks like a precursor and predictor of every indie comedy of the past decade.
