APURSANSAR'S FEMALE DIRECTORS CANON

By: apursansar

List inspired by Kenji and the Astro-Tofupraxographer.

only one film per director…

missing from the database:

Black Harvest (Robin Anderson, 1992) co-d

The final film of the acclaimed Highlands Trilogy and one of the greatest documentaries I’ve ever watched. It tells the tragic failure of Joe Leahy who first appeared in “Joe Leahy’s Neighbours”, a mixed-race coffee plantage owner who desperately tries to maintain his business in Papua New Guinea despite tribal warfare, dumping market sales and protesting workers. The final scenes of the film are devastating, we have to witness how things that have been built up during a lifetime fall apart.

Surname Việt Given Name Nam (Trinh T. Minh-ha, 1989)

A masterpiece of feminist filmmaking, Trinh T. Minh-ha’s homage to her birth country combines documentary footage, poems and faked interviews to a definite statement on the role of women in Vietnamese society while at the same time capturing moments of enormous beauty.

Shuar, People of the Sacred Waterfalls (Lisa Fässler, 1987)

One of the outstanding ethnographic documentaries, Lisa Fässler’s approach on the Shuar people from the Amazonas regions of Ecuador is a remarkable achievement. We get to understand their difficult borderline walking between modern lifestyle and Indian traditions and the struggle with the country’s authorities.

to be continued…

Most Looking Forward To: The Sea of Lost Time (Solveig Hoogesteijn), The Hunger Years (Jutta Brückner), Farewell China (Clara Law), The Fortress (Drahomíra Vihanová), Love Wanders in the Night (Frieda Liappa), The Sleep of Reason (Ula Stöckl), Exile Shanghai (Ulrike Ottinger), Song of Freedom (Catherine Masud), Malou (Jeanine Meerapfel) to be continued…

Ohh... amazing list. I wonder if you know the spanish director Mercedes Álvarez. I love her The Sky Turns (El cielo gira). Last year I saw a promising argentinian film, The Intern (El Pasante), directed by Clara Picasso. And finally I could recommend a surprising Hong Kong film: The Mistress that was directed by actress Crystal Kwok. Ups! And I can't forget this astonishing piece from Tacita Dean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGv71UqPPVc
