Atmosphere of horror

By: Braden Vallenères

These films are all favourite horror films of mine, but more specifically they each portray a very atmospheric and subtle kind of creeping horror. Be they gothic, psychological, or expressionistic, each of these films leaves an indelible unease after viewing. If you prefer a slow build and long shadows to sudden frights and fake blood, you might like these films.

Having read your review of Seventh Continent, I found myself wondering if that movie doesn't fit quite nicely in your list. It's not that subtle, but it's definitely atmospheric and leaves an "indelible unease after viewing."

Good point! I think I'll keep this list to that which is firmly in the horror genre, though. Perhaps that would make another list: films of unease.

Nosferatu is great, but there's no way I can call it superior to The Haunting or Vampyr, the two greatest horror films in my books. And Isle of the Dead is also a great one, but I already had two Val Lewton flicks on there and didn't want to over-do it. As far as I'm concerned, all of the Lewton-produced horror flicks are perfect.

Murnau's NOSFERATU is a great film. I cannot endorse any of your other 9, as they are all inferior horror films. And "The Shining" is puerile rubbish.

Nice list, may I suggest Isle of the Dead directed by Mark Robson (1945 I believe) with Boris Karloff.
