Little question for you: have you ever directed a film? With this shitload of films (I mean that in the nicest of ways, you sure know a lot about experimental, art-house and avant-gard films and filmmaking, etc) on your list, you must, right? Just asking...kiss kiss.
Wonderful text, I found it enlightening, inspiring and very well put together. I have yet to watch many of the films listed, but thanks for this guide.
I feel like i am at the right place now. Great. Thanks guys nice to be around.
Wonderful list and very informative. Man, I have a lot of watching to do now!
Thanks for the suggestions/corrections kenji... See, that's why I have only 8 lists - because it would be way too much work otherwise.
This is one of the crown jewels of Mubi. Such a beautiful and effective presentation. Isn't it La (not le) Ciselure? And i wonder if Hammid/ Hackenschmied might have both names each time to avoid confusion as if 2 separate people. Is Aimless Walk worth including? Given this film and his grounding in European 20s avant-garde isn't he, as much as if not more than Deren, the bridge you credit her as? Anyway, loads now for me to catch up on- so many films even 460 is tough selecting for you!
You know what bugs me? The fact that so many of these artists are only valued by critics for their influence over vastly inferior artists. Who cares if Kenneth Anger influenced Scorcese and Lynch when his work is so much more interesting, and relevant, than their watered down narratives. End of rant. Still a great list that I have a lot more to learn from. Thanks.
So incredible. I'm teaching a course in the fall on the subject - i just may have to glean from your research and expertise !
