Best of 2010

By: ryan birch

These are my favorite films of 2010:

1. A Prophet
2. Enter the Void
3. Carlos
4. True Grit
5. White Material
6. Four Lions

Those six above I truly loved, while the rest I really enjoyed but wasn’t totally knocked out by.

- The Social Network
- Greenberg
- Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
- Toy Story 3
- Winter’s Bone
- Black Swan
- Animal Kingdom
- The Fighter
- Exit Through the Gift Shop

Still have quite a few films to catch up on: Mother, Restrepo, Fishtank, The American, Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives, Dogtooth, The Illusionist, Mesrine, Life During Wartime, Red Riding Trilogy, Another Year and I Am Love.

Hey Ryan - stumbled across your list(s) and thought I'd say hey. Nice picks for 2010, curious about your second row (6-12). I agree with True Grit, solid film whether or not it was a remake or despite it was. I can't help but think of Bronson when I read your pic A Prophet (though I would think the two are quite different) and I have not seen Enter the Void or Carlos. White Material did not speak to me but I can see the appeal of Claire Denis - perhaps it was Isabelle Huppert and her sense of strained purposelessness, the great abandonment for her character coming across to me as desperate, one-dimensional and hard to connect with. Maybe it was just such a brave performance by Huppert that reached you. I found The Social Network much less than the hype, though admittedly I'm not the biggest fan of Eisenberg - he telegraphs his emotions beneath a furtive brow, always pained so as though in perpetual contemplation or maybe in search of a broader range of emotional variance to his expression. I know, that's probably harsh but it is what it is. I have interesting reviews of most of your 6-12 pics if you're interested. best->
