But what I really want to do is...

By: Joe Bowman

…Direct, of course! This list contains films directed by those who are (and, for some, probably will always) best recognized for their work in front of the camera. Certainly there have been actors like Clint Eastwood who have made the successful transition to the director’s chair, so this list will cover the lesser regarded actor-cum-réalisateurs, for better or worse. Suggestions are always welcome.

I don’t really know where to put someone like Mel Gibson, so I’ll just leave him off. Ditto, Charles Laughton (as his sole directorial effort is more recognized than a lot of his acting work). I also left off the performers recognizable equally (or close to) as both actor and director: Keaton, Chaplin, Allen, Benigni, Albert Brooks, Laurence Olivier, Orson Welles, Dani Levy, Margarethe von Trotta, Kenneth Branagh, Robert Redford, Jackie Chan, Mathieu Kassovitz, Gene Kelly, Erich von Stroheim, Spike Lee…

Some others I wasn’t sure about: Danny DeVito, Agnès Jaoui, Vincent Gallo
