CHINA AND TAIWAN

By: Kenji

Raise the Red Lantern

China, managed by Myra, won our Auteurs film World Cup in 2009, while Taiwan also performed very creditably: there are treasures aplenty.

Rouge (Kwan)

My favourites from China and Taiwan:

Spring in a Small Town (Fei Mu)
The Time to Live and the Time to Die (Hou Hsiao-hsien)
A Brighter Summer Day (Yang)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Ang Lee)
Red Sorghum (Zhang Yimou)
Chungking Express (Wong Kar-Wai)
Wayward Cloud (Tsai Ming-Liang)
City of Sadness (Hou Hsaio-hsien)
Raise the Red Lantern (Zhang Yimou)
In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-Wai)
Goddess (Wu Yonggang)
Daybreak (Sun Yu)
Street Angel (Yuan Muzhi)
Still Life (Jia Zhangke)

A Brighter Summer Day

See also Myra’s superb and very informative separate lists on Chinese Cinema and Taiwanese Cinema, and 2 poll lists of 100 best films, The Golden Horse Film Fest and Hong Kong Film Awards. Also Arsaib’s great lists China, the Fourth Generation and Wu Wenguang on the Documentary film maker

And below, a list of essentials from both countries, in year order

I like many of your personal favourites. Myra is a prodigy in terms of the cinematic output of both of these countries but this and your British and Italian ones are amongst my favorite of your countries film collections.
