Cinema Marginal Brasileiro.
By: F.
In 1967 “A Margem” by Ozualdo Candeias was the very first film to be included in the Marginal movement, and the one that was responsible for the name and creation of “Cinema Marginal”. Others denominations was invented by people like Glauber Rocha, that used to call “Udigrúdi” a funny and “brazilian” way to say " Underground"; or Cinema de Invenção (Cinema of Invention) that was recently called by Jairo Ferreira.
The Marginal Cinema was a way to represent in film the life of the society’s forgotten people.
Even though the budget was too low, they did want to show us that, because it was a way to deny the mainstream films and to defend the filth, the bad and the negligible. Unfortunately a lots of marginal films couldn’t participate of festivals because of the lack of technical conditions. So they organized parallel exhibitions in Brasilia. The model proposed by ‘marginais’ was a pattern of poor film, one that questioned the whole film policy and its standard model. The real rejection of the film well done for the screen dirty and the aesthetics of trash. Was a counterculture, an unsightly.

.
Bandido da Luz Vermelha by Rogério Sganzerla, was inspired by the life of the robber João Acácio Pereira da Costa, his nick name was the Red Light Bandit (Bandido da Luz Vermelha). It is one of the most representative film in Cinema Marginal. Sganzerla was only 22 when he made the movie.

It is really important to remember that Brazil was in one of the most tumultuous periods in its history with a dictatorial govenment, a lots of artists were tortured and exiled. That period runs from the year 1964 until the year 1985. This period was characterized by the absence of democracy, annulment of constitutional rights, censorship, political persecution and those who were not in favor of the military regime were reprimanded.

This is not a movie.
“The big problem we had was a dictatorship, it was very strong, censorship was very, terrible, terrible, terrible, you know? (…). There were tapes of mine that did not come to pass, to my greatest masterpiece, like The Awakening of the Beast, which was the first title of sadistic ritual that after I had to change the title (…) By the pursuit of censorship, by pseudo-intellectuals, critics who failed to make movies, chasing us, right? A restless own exhibitors who began assembling their production.”
José Mojica Marins (Coffin Joe)
Sadly in the begining of the 70’s with the high tension in the country a lots of filmmakers were forced leave the country and go to europe. Nowadays the movement is almost forgotten.
“O Terceiro Mundo já explodiu e o lixo está contaminando o universo!
Salve a boçalidade do submundo!
Quem tiver de sapato não vai sobrar, não vai sobrar, não vai!
O negócio é o seguinte:
Quando a gente não pode fazer nada, a gente avacalha e se esculhamba!
O Bandido da Luz Vermelha".
“Marginal Cinema is a pure cinema, a real cinema, purity and truth summarize everything. (…) in fact, was the film made with ardor, creativity, wanting to make movies, but that was not related to groups. We had initially Cinema Novo movement, but the Cinema Novo was a movie a little individualistic.”

“Marginal is a name as another. Points to the mood of a generation that decided to make movies, smarting from within a new ideological universe, under the impact of multiple lifestyle revolution and a social revolution.
In fact, we still live today in the 60’s. This is the axis of production, very poorly known, which sets the tone in Brazilian Cinema between 1968 and 1974. Vanguard has always existed and will exist after. The melancholy of the media also excluded. But the hero marginal, marginal in the center, as proposed marginal impact, rupture, the marginal under the skin, building density as a movement, lives in this period. _ And more can never forget: the horror, the agonizing closeness of the enemy arrogant and authoritarian, the threat of physical destruction in slow and ignoble: torture.
Outside Cinema films bring this horror, with all ssuas letters, a representation of the repeated figures of abjection. This is the mark of a rupture that would later be watered down, absorbed and transformed into the dominant ideology at the turn of the century. In the harrowing intensity of these films, the representation in the structures disrupted, a cry of agony and horror runs through the fictional universe. How to remember the birth pangs of an ideological context that was born there and that maybe so, there has also increased its intensity."
Fernão Ramos
