Cinéma Vérité & Direct Cinema
By: La Schiff
Cinéma Vérité
French movement of the 1960’s: “truth cinema”, influenced by documentary film-making and Italian Neorealism
-Shot with non-actors, show people as they really are (contrary to Hollywood film)
-Small hand-held cameras, easy to shoot on location, common to keep the cameras rolling
-Utilized actual homes and surroundings, as opposed to sets
-Focused on everyday situations, authentic dialogue, naturalness of action, interviews
-Usually shot without a script, then relied on power of editing to transform material
-Often a social conscious and sometimes political agenda
-Stresses unbiased realism, intended to provoke and reveal
Direct Cinema
Simultaneous North American movement, principally in the Canadian province of Quebec & The United States
-More observational, documentary
-Non-intervention of the filmmaker
*Notable filmmakers of the period: Jon Alpert, Richard Leacock, Michel Brault & Gilles Groulx, Chris Marker, Jean Rouch, The Maysles Brothers
*Also included are filmmakers that have been influenced by these techniques that aren’t directly from the period, such as Harmony Korine, Pedro Costa, etc…
