Contemplative Cinema is a Cause to Celebrate Consciousness, Cuz

By: House of Leaves

“Contemplation doesn’t have to mean anything, doesn’t have to give sense to a plot, doesn’t have to drive the story, doesn’t have to give personality to characters… It is an extraordinary moment devoid of intellectualized discourse, psychological manipulation or personal messages. We have to learn to see beauty in emptiness, in dead times, in impersonal sounds… and in silence.”
—Harry Tuttle

I second the Sátántangó recommendation. Lots of films on here I still need to see. I'll probably start watching Tsai's filmography soon.

I agree with you about Antonio, but Age of the Earth certainly qualifies.

I'm a bit confused by either Antonio das Mortes or The Age of the Earth being on this list. 2001 seems a bit out of place to me as well. The Rocha films are a bit outsized for contemplative cinema in my mind, and I think I'm thrown off by the overwhelming importance of nondiegetic sound in the Kubrick.

The Naked Island (Kaneto Shindo) is begging for a spot on this list
