I was just wondering which Godard film to pick before seeing these comments- i've not seen Made in USA, but i was thinking maybe there's something of Ugetsu in Pierrot le Fou; Godard having likened Ugetsu to The Odyssey (and Jude the Obscure and Don Quixote rolled into one!), but Godard is of course always Godard.

In 2 or 3 things about her there is poster of Ugetsu.

In Made in USA there is a character with Last Name Mizoguchi, in Histoire's Du Cinema there is a scene from a Mizoguchi film (I think Chikamatsu monogatari)

godard revered mizoguchi and you could certainly pick and choose parts from many of his films that are nods to him. he is in all likelihood the greatest artist in the history of movies. renoir, chaplin, bunuel...the true competitors are few. i kind of like shindo's doc.

Dimitris, yes, Oliveira and Erice are also both Mizo admirers. Cue a couple of my favourites from the Iberian peninsula to add, but which Rivette?

Yes, my little book by Yoda on Mizo mentions Rome Open City re Women of the Night.

Arsiab, yes yes, Women of the Night is certainly influenced by neo-realism. Sato Tadao, the top Japanese critic, rated the film as Mizo's best in his book on Mizo in the 80s. Now how to change the order on my list? i'll have to add it on the bottom for the moment, will just check that reference and which neo-realist film(s) to have Dimitris, the fluid moves between past and present, the way characters appear in certain spots at different moments in time, in Angelopoulos reminded me of the scenes in Ugetsu with Tanaka Kinuyo, now you don't see her, now you do, and that's your compatriot's favourite by Mizoguchi. It also can be linked to the superb family dance scene in Ulysses' Gaze. I've not seen Voyage to Cythera. And let's not forget the mist in Ugetsu, the reeds, river bank, long travelling shots with both Mizo and Angelopoulos

Carlotta’s “Kenji Mizoguchi – Les années 40″ box set featured an interview with one-time Mizoguchi assistant Shindô Kaneto in which he recalled that at one point during the making of the neorealistic _Women of the Night_, Mizoguchi asked his cameraman Sugiyama Kôhei: “Did you see the Italian film, the Rossellini film? You’re filming the old-fashioned way, you must change!” :)

hey,i thought it would have been solely films regarding Mizoguchi's influence, not Mizoguchi's own films :P cool list but i see more in Days of Heaven than New World into Mizoguchi and i see no connection whatsoever between Travelling Players and Ugetsu but maybe it's just me.... (Voyage to Cythera is more appropriate) Oliveira's female sensibility also seems to fit the bill here,no? ;)

i'll need to check if Mizo shared his scriptwriter Yoda's high opinion of Yamanaka (eg Humanity and Paper Balloons). Yamanaka paid with his life for his leftism under the militarist govt, and Yoda had been tortured in the early 30s.

Ghatak is a good choice, he called Mizoguchi one of his gurus and even stated about his personal favorite film: "After watching Ugetsu Monogatari, I was staggered, I mean I went completely crazy. That’s what a real film is!"
