I still insist that Eastern Europe should only be counted up until Romania. Anything beyond is considered South Eastern ;) Unless of course you measure Eastern Europe as a whole, Turkey, Russia etc. Oh, and Dogtooth and Weeping Meadow are NOT essential elixirs, hardly I'd say :) Remove Greece and Yugoslavia and Albania and add more Hungary and Poland. (and more Russian-related countries too)
I've seen a few of these and they're some of my favorite films yet. I can't wait to dive into more Eastern European film.
it's a pity that such few people have watched 'the saragossa manuscript'. it's hilarious!! and 'inception', with it's dreams inside dreams, has nothing on that movie. now, how do you spell the name of the main actor?
Hi Kenji, sorry I did not realise that the lists were made according to what's available on Mubi. I sincerely wish the two films become available here for more people to watch. Anyways, your lists are incredible! Thanks for all the hard work :)
Fantastic list! But, a couple of omissions I can think of are Upthrown Stone (or A Thrown Up Stone) by Sandor Sara and The Outpost by Peter Gothar., both Hungarian :)
the list is going well, but i'll still protest about Weeping Meadow and Zorba the Greek ;)
Zorba is great like Mihai mentions but it's neither essential nor on par to Kakogianni's previous work, including his latter parts of the Tragedies trilogy. same goes for Weeping Meadow ;) Zanussi MUST fit your bill and Zulawski too with Silver Globe for instance.
Forget about Mungiu`s "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" Cannes 2007 award winning film. Didn`t get in the mood to see it yet, but i can strongly advice you to check some works by Lucian PINTILIE , undoubtebly the most important romanian film director. For eg "The Oak" , "Terminus Paradis" and "Un ete inoubliable" /" An unforgettable summer" (for the better part the first two ones). It`s such a sad thing that an auteur(i think he ranks between the greatest yet the most underrated living film directors/auteurs) that had such powerfull (and personal) depictions of themes treating individual freedom/conscience vs an absurd system doesn`t get a little bit more attention. It`s also a sad`s life irony that Nemescu has died in a car crash provoked by an US Marine- US Embassy limo driver that was smuggled out of Romania to escape the trial (and was latter acquitted in US by a US judge} , as long as his film deals with a historic hope and delusion about the coming of the americans in eastern Europe (similar they went to Berlin in `45) in order to safeguard and ensure freedom and democracy for the local population against the incoming Red Army Communism that establised itself as state communism til `89 ( the nazi-es were out, but the commies were in and stayed on) . That`s the whole fuzz about Nemescu, his "California Dreamin" may be interesting, but i wouldn`t call it one "essential piece of eastern european cinema ". I think Jan Sverak`s "Akumulator" , Mihalis Kakogiannis` "Zorba the Greek " , Jiri Menzel`s "Larks on a string"/ "A capricious summer" / "I served the king of England" would well deserve to be mentioned on this list(even though they are already listed with different movies that I haven`t seen) , or into another of really great , beautifull and meaningfull eastern european cinema. Besides Kieslowski, I admit that most names/films are unknown or sound vague to me , didn`t get to see yet nothing involving Vlacil/ Angelopoulos/ Bela Tarr/ Wajda ( i know I should work on that) ; I only wish to say congrats to Kenji, you`re doing such a fine job, and is such a pleasure to watch from distance and learn from you.
there are some other eastern-european-masterpieces that are sadly omitted on this site, for instance first 4 skolimowski's movies, agnieszka holland's polish catalogue, couple of zanuussi's best. there is literally NOTHING devoted to the great wojciech marczewski or tadeusz konwicki. its surprisingly that all those brilliant movies are still kept as a secret for the west. and its been 20 years since the fall of the iron curtain.
You can also add some other Romanian ones like "A fost sau n-a fost"("12:08 East of Bucharest" - Corneliu Porumboiu), "Poitist, adj" also Corneliu Porumboiu, "The Deah of mister Lazarescu" (Cristi Puiu), "California Dreamin'", "Morometii" by Stere Gulea. Emir Kusturica's "Black Cat White Cat" would go well with "Time of the Gypsies" (in fact some actors play in both).
i wish they had the older Kieslowski films like No End,that way you could spare your Double Life love for another list ;) major neglect not only for Bulgaria but for Estonia and Lithuania too but as it is now,i'm thoroughly waiting for all the Cup films to be added instead of demanding features... p.s.: i never accepted the Old East, which means in my eyes Balkans (other than the dubious Romania) is South Europe and only....which is why i'm eagerly waiting for more films from that region as well for a personal list...
