I should recommend M (Fritz Lang), Ran (Kurosawa), Offret (Tarkovsky), Bleak Moments (Leigh), Violence at Noon (Nagisa Ôshima), Sisters of the Gion, Downfall of Osen, The Water Magician (Mizoguchi). Actually almost every Mizoguchi I've seen is quite pessimistic, but that's all I can recall for now. Great list btw.
