Essential Samurai Films

By: Kenji

Tales of the Taira Clan

I’m not an action fan, some here are relatively slow and quiet, an alternative let’s say- the 2 Mizoguchi films for instance are hardly full of violent action…but this is still more Kurosawa’s territory. After the Rain (1999) is a surprisingly neglected film scripted by Kurosawa, directed by his long time assistant, i’m very fond of it. As it’s an “essentials” (not “favourites”) list, i’ve not seen all here and nor is it fully comprehensive.

suggestions welcome.

Samurai Assassin is now on MUBI if you wanted to update your list! And maybe Shinoda's Samurai Spy (1965) deserves a place on the list?

Great list Kenji! I love samurai films, and they're solely responsible for sparking my interest in world cinema. All the best in here plus a whole bunch of additions to the "wants to watch list" =]

Humanity and Paper Balloons a samurai film?

Cool list, seems like you've got all my favourites here. Also worth watching are 'Samurai Assassin', 'Shogun's Samurai' and the Shintaro Katsu 'Zatoichi' films.
