Wow, yeah you've been putting in work. Good work too, but you still need to see some Hara ;-) I like the thoughts on Death by Hanging and I've actually noticed that some people are disappointed in Oshima in general after seeing it.

Trust me, Hara is on my queue, although, for some reason, he's after Oshima, Masumura, Kon Ichikawa, and maybe one or two more. I don't know why. But Extreme Private Eros is still on a short wait, and another one of his films is, too... :( And I don't know why people would NOT like Oshima after Death by Hanging. That was just...WOW! Savvy

I didn't say people didn't like him. What I meant was that people were disappointed with the rest of his work due to the outright brilliance of Death By Hanging. You should also see Sansho the Bailiff! That's another one that will blow you away.

Nice! This list has certainly evolved. Hopefully some Naruse is in the offing. :) Arsaib

It is eventually, although finding Naruse films doesn't seem to be the easiest thing. I'm sure I can download some, although I just don't know where to start (apart from the ones that have been released by Criterion). Thanks. :)

You can watch "Floating Clouds" online if you like. To me it's one of his greatest films. Here it is: (http://stagevu.com/video/tjbklvetdgbw). "When a Woman Ascends the Stairs" is also available at that site (just search "Naruse") but you might want to get a hold of the Criterion DVD in order to view it properly. Let me know if you're interested in any particular film from him and I'll give you the download links or upload it for you. :) Arsaib

Dude you need to see LOTS of Mizoguchi, later Ozu, Naruse, Suzuki, Kobayashi, Yoshida, and the best Oshima's - everything pre Realm of the Senses. Japan has the highest number of great films out of any country in the world, there's never been a low period. Keep going!

I second those recommendations. Plus you need to get into Kazuo Hara!

You should add these two films to your list. I don't think Japanese films, or any films for that matter, get any better. “When a Woman Ascends the Stairs” (1960) directed by Mikio Naruse “Harakiri” (1962) directed by Masaki Kobayashi
