Favorite films by Yasujiro Ozu

By: Genaro Navarro

Ozu is the first great cinema poet of time. Time trapped in the cinematographic image, the erradication of narrative in the image. All of his films are very visual, melancholic, human and even abstract. For me his cinema is truly radical, his Mise en scène is not conventional. His cinema doesnt approach to what we expect in a movie, He is faraway of being the traditionalist that Many have been calling him.

He is the ultimate cinematographic hero of life and living the cinema.

The films that I havent seen are:

The lady and the beard
Straightforward Boy

When I was younger and much more immature than I am now, I couldn't even get through one half of Tokyo Story, and I would watch Lav Diaz's Batang Westside 3 more times before finally finishing Tokyo Story. I found myself in tears by the end. Five more Ozu films later, I could not get enough of him. It would have been great to go to the Hong Kong Film Festival the year of his 100th birthday to watch the complete retrospective of his existing works (30+ films or so?). Next to Cassavetes, Akerman, Silos, Bernal, Noonan, he is on my list of filmmakers who I feel closest to personally. =)

Just starting to venture into Ozu territory, so this list will be quite helpful.

I love all of these so much! Well, I haven't seen An Only Son yet, but I should.
