I probably need to see it again. I saw it years ago on a VHS tape that was hard to watch. Reading the subtitles was a lost cause. The film did nothing for me. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise given the condition I saw it in. On the other hand, the first time I saw Osaka Elegy and Sisters of Gion on VHS copies that were in similar condition, and I loved them. Even when I couldn't follow the plot, I could follow Mizoguchi's eloquent and fluid use of space. Chrysanthemums seemed much more...rigid in comparison. But like I said, I should probably see it again.
