Nice list Kenji. 2 others I like are Sholay and Amar Akbar Anthony.
Hey Kenji. Have you seen Meghe Dhaka Tara? The song by the great tree is amazing. Thanks for the fantastic list
here are a some incredible indian films that you may want to dig around for:
Kanchana Sita/ Esthappan/ Thampu (G. Aravindan)
27 Down (Avtar Kaul)
Thin Air/ John & Jane (Ashim Ahluwalia)
The Dust (Ashim Ahluwalia, 1993/94?) - very hard to find.
Kahani (Moloy Bhattacharya, 2000>) - very hard to find.
Rudiger wrote a book? that's excellent! What directors does he cover and is it available in English do you know? Also, forgive me if I mentioned it before, but Mani Ratnam's films Dile Se and A Peck on the Cheek are worth checking out as well if you haven't seen them.
superb list. I found everything I was looking for. :)
Thanks for including my other list as well :) I hope you'll give mani Kaul a chance, and Aravindan... You're so right, apart from mainstream Indian cinema there are many gems to be discovered. :)
Thanks a million Kenji for fanning my list and for including it here :) Hope to see Seddheshwari here too some day :)
This list is sooooo good. Thanks for introducing me to Gutt, Ghatak and Amohri. They are the best things I have seen this year!!
Keep up the good fight :)
Thank you Kenji for this list. Somehow my favourites matches that of yours! All these great artists have made a great impact on my inner perspectives staring with Guru Dutt while I was just eight.
well spotted, yes she should be on the list (as with my female directors list) thanks
I think the Director Deepa Mehta should be in this list. Her Films (yes, another female director), like Fire, Water and Earth are very controversial. They deal with subjects like Homosexuality and tradition in indian families. Its no surprise why they are all produced by a canadian production company.
Have you seen Seeta Aur Geeta? It's from 1972 and directed by Ramesh Sippy. It's a bit cliched with identicle twins seperated at birth but it's pretty much the first female action role in Bollywood and just a bit of fun among the more serious films.
I'll have to give Pakeezah another go... I really found it a bit insufferable... but this list will be very helpful.
Thanks for this! I really want to get more into Indian film.
no, not seen, and thanks for the addition
Kenji, so you have seen Sivaji:The Boss ??
and the year 2002 totally belongs to Varma's Company and not Bhansali's Devdas.
