Thanks! BEST OF YOUTH was a nice discovery for me - I could have passed on MY BROTHER IS AN ONLY CHILD however. A big thumbs up to SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE and the other Bergman films - I wanted to watch more but needed a break! If you like NAKED CITY, check out the commentary on the criterion DVD!

Good stuff here. I really love Best of Youth. Naked City is quite brilliant, as well as Scenes from a Marriage.

Hi Christopher I read his autobiography a while back and he was really messed up, as many geniuses are! I watched the film version and it probably is very different due to the amount of time involved. I was just infuriated by the husband's behaviour and that she was so forgiving and still wanted him! It reminded me of Bergman's biography, he left at least two of his wives in the same way and neglected his children. I loved his films and even this one was compelling (and certainly memorable!) but I just found the way the couple related to be very dated. I think Bergman was trying to come to grips with his own demons. Kath

Thanks for your comment, Katherine. Did you watch the TV series version or the film? I just watched episodes 4 and 5 of the TV version last night and am looking forward to the last one tonight. I find both the characters bother me in one way or another, but yet like them at the same time. Well done to Bergman for creating such complicated (and yes, unappealing!) characters. I don't know much about his personal life, but that's an interesting take.
