Films and Filmmakers John Cassavetes Admired

By: _Tyler_

Cassavetes was a fan of Kurosawa but I’m not sure which films… For this list I selected IKIRU. He was also a fan of “early Bergman” so I selected SUMMER INTERLUDE to represent this.

A PLACE IN THE SUN is on the list to represent his admiration for Montgomery Clift, and ON THE WATERFRONT for Marlon Brando.

His favorite directors were Frank Capra and Carl Dreyer.

Oh of course a director can make great films after seeing not many films, or having seen loads. I now see Cassavetes shares Leigh's love for Boudu, thta's an interesting selection. A useful list, and Gertrud is an excellent #1, that interests me too. Anyway, Carney seems to imply that directors who don't share his taste and appreciation for certain directors are lesser critics or judges of film for it. Yes, you can't infer from a list what else someone may or may not have seen, simply what they most like among those films they have. Anyway, hardly any US directors i've seen polled, e.g by Sight and Sound, have ever picked a Mizoguchi film, he's simply not very well known there compared with Kurosawa, Fellini and Bergman. I only wish i liked Leigh and Casasvetes more..
