Films directed by writers

By: David Semblance

I’m interested in the idea of artists known primarily as literary writers/novelists crossing over into film direction (as opposed to film writing which is much more common), so any suggestions for additions to the list would be appreciated.
Thankyou to mubi users Ian, Laali, Arsaib, Mal(((o)))mbra, Two Dead Magpies, Apursansar, Lucas, Dirtybee, Ally the Manic Listmaker, Experimentofilm, Kenji, Martinus, Uli³Cain, Kleber, Montenegro, Risselda, Cat, Matt Parks, Nathan M, Aaron Garrett and Brentos for their contributions.
Would like to include ’You’re Human Like The Rest of Them’ by B.S. Johnson but it isn’t listed on mubi yet…

"Crésus", the only film directed by the great French writer Jean Giono (not on MUBI). Also "The Trench" by William Boyd. Neil Jordan is also a writer of short stories and novels. Eric de Kuyper is a Belgian writer and directed 4 films (none of them on MUBI).

Bertolucci was son of a distinguished poet, and already published and winning awards himself before making films. And i think Jonas Mekas may deserve inclusion as he is highly rated as a poet in Lithuania
