Films I Really Want to See

By: Catherine Krummey

I have more than 41,000 films marked as “want to see” on here, but the following films are the ones on the top of the list.

In general, I would like to see more of the classics, both from America and around the world. I have done a fairly good job so far, but I would like to expand, thus this list.

Directors I’m trying to “complete” (the start of my list): Edgar Wright (complete until The World’s End comes out), Hal Ashby (three left), Alfred Hitchcock (only six left), Pedro Almodóvar, Wong Kar-wai, Baz Luhrmann (only The Great Gatsby left to see), François Truffaut, George Cukor, Todd Haynes

Directors I (desperately) want to see more of: John Cassavetes, Peter Bogdanovich, Jean-Luc Godard, Agnès Varda, Robert Altman, Billy Wilder, Federico Fellini

The rest are recommendations I’ve received from other people, Oscar/other award-winners or films that are coming soon to theaters.

I basically have added every film that was added to The Auteurs/Mubi database, but I haven't done that in a while.

I will pretty much watch anything once.

That is the very spirit I envy about you (and I, me I do not even know you). "I will pretty much watch anything once." That is what I seek too. I always did try and do just that. But with a moral and ethic compass to it, though. Historically relevant, within a genre, within a country's filmography, within an actor's, etc, etc, I have my guidelines. My I do appreciate your desire toward all films. That human curiosity is the main reason why I decided to be here on this very social, social network. So far, so good. My question is: you reckon you will get around to see that many films, during your lifetime? Sometimes I think I should uncheck my watchlist list and just add the films I did see, the second I happen to actually see them, know what I mean? Other than that, I do not know whether my mortal body will endure 20.000 more films or 2 more, you know? How many is too many? Good reply, though.

I know I won't see all of these films in my lifetime. If I did, it would have to be in some kind of capacity that I get paid to do it and pretty much have no time for any kind of life. ;p

I made the "Films I Really Want to See" list to keep track of the genres and directors' films that I'm more interested in seeing than the rest of the 27,000.

No criticism from my part oh Catherine :) Just meant to say what would happen in say 20 years if you actually came here (I mean how long would it take for a human being with family, job and responsibilities to actually watch all those films? I am sure Langlois saw the whole collection of films that did enter his vaults. Considering the amount that today is known to be within Cinemathèque Française vaults and the fact that he was the all-time biggest film-buff/cinéphile of us all, how many films - considering re-runs, re-watches, etc - do you reckon that that man did manage to see during all of his lifetime? 100.000 thousand? Man!) and said "guess what. Did finish watching all these 27.000 film titles. Phew." Oh now I get why you did it. Ain't that much clever these days. Still that is a nice dream. And i'm all about dreams.

I more-or-less ordered this by my obsessions (directors I'm trying to "complete," the French New Wave, etc.). One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is on here because it's one of the few "classics" (along with Lawrence of Arabia) that I haven't seen.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest ought to be at the top of your list by virtue of how everyone has seen it.

I think it will take forever, especially since the list keeps growing (I'll probably be hitting 13,000 soon).
