I wouldn't have thought of Mosquito Coast, it's quite a while since i saw it- did it have nuclear/apocalyptic sense or more a bitterness towards the state of US and the world?
From what I remember, and now a quick check of wikipedia confirms, it was referencing the fear of nuclear war directly, in addition to the general bitterness, and there was even references to Japan and the bombs Fat Man and Little Boy via the ice machine. It's similar to I Live in Fear basically.
I just watched "Silence has no Wings" (http://mubi.com/films/35809). One section of the film takes place in Hiroshima and the voice over centers around the atomic bomb and its physiological and psychological effects on the inhabitants of the city.
3 that came to mind: THE ATOMIC KID ('54) - Leslie H. Martinson - A uranium prospector is eating a peanut butter sandwich in the desert where atom bomb tests are being done. He becomes radioactive, and helps the FBI break up an enemy spy ring.-----imdb, SOUTHLAND TALES ('06) - Richard Kelly - Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros is an action star who's stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now, an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Ronald Taverner, a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.-----imdb, FAT MAN AND LITTLE BOY ('89) - Roland Joffe - In real life, Robert Oppenheimer was the scientific head of the Manhattan Project, the secret wartime project in New Mexico where the first atomic bombs were designed and built. General Leslie Groves was in overall command of it. This film reenacts the project with an emphasis on their relationship.-----imdb.
"H Story":http://www.theauteurs.com/films/3964 should qualify. Oh, and don't forget to mention "Crossroads":http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0130586/ by Bruce Conner!
Here are some more titles I can think of: - Rhapsody in August - Dr. Akagi - Barefoot Gen - Japan´s Longest Day - The Face of Jizo
Kaneto Shindô´s "Children of Hiroshima" (1952) also needs to be added to the database...
...and Nagasaki looms large during the film-within-a-film in Teshigahara's The Face of Another.
