Happiness is...

By: Mugino

…ephemeral and illusory. Happiness is sometimes difficult (if not impossible) to have yet absurdly easy to lose. Those who don’t appreciate its presence when it is there are the ones who mourn its loss the most. Those who accept its transitory nature and see the immensity of small joys are in communion with the gods.

Films about happiness aren’t necessarily happy films. Tragedies can teach us how not to be unhappy or at least stop being unhappy about not being happy.

For me, the following films are meditations on happiness, distilled from the whole film or sometimes from a detail as small as a fleeting look on an actor’s face reflecting the universal yearning for everlasting happiness.

If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.

I welcome all suggestions and feedback. IMO, Lee & Gray in Secretary find their niche, their "home" in each other, relating in a way that only they can understand. The look of completion in their eyes when they realize the void in their lives is no longer empty says "happiness" to me. A lot of people see it as a sex movie but I don't. I haven't seen Whisper of the Heart or Young Girls of Rochefort yet. At the risk of being ostracized I have to confess that I am not a fan of Miyazaki, although I grew up seeing many of his films -- that genre isn't my cup of tea (sorry!). Rochefort looks delightful!

But I disagree with Secretary. If you welcome any more suggestions, may I suggest Whisper of the Heart, Kiki's Delivery Service and The Young Girls of Rochefort?
