Hatred of Capitalism

By: scorpiorising

An unfair distribution of the world’s resources among people, among nations, etc. A lot of wealth and resources being possessed by only a relatively few number of people, leaving others in extreme poverty. Supermalls, supermarkets, superstores, getting the smaller stores out of business, along with the cold-blooded tactics they will resort to, to get rid of potential threats. Society’s idolatry of high-standards living, the upper-class lifestyles. Rampant consumerism, that seems to be necessary to make the capitalist system work. And in order for people to keep buying, for the business transactions to keep going, the message of “what I own is what I am” is constantly shown to us by advertising and the media. The individual is not a person anymore, but now merely a “customer”. The de-humanization of people. The use of internships by business companies, with the excuse of giving interns experience and the necessary skills, enabling the companies to have free human capital. Society’s preference for the hard sciences over the liberal arts and deprivation/discouragement of human creativity and artistic expression. And the list goes on and on.

Surely, anyone who claims to be a humanist can see that there is something wrong with this system. And, whether these effects on society and humans are inherent in the capitalist model or not, surely there must be another political-ideological model that can work. And, maybe, another better, more humane, more fair, political system will take over the current one, maybe not even in my lifetime. One would like to hope so.

Guy Debord’s Society of the Spectacle

I included in this list films that I think either criticize the capitalist system (or at least some aspects of it) or show how the capitalist system has had a negative impact on people and nations. And, of course, most of these films are not without their complex and ambiguous messages towards the various political ideologies. Suggestions are welcome, and I shall add them if I see fit.

Workers of the world, unite, but DO NOT create communism again, because it's a disaster as big as capitalism and nazism taken together. nice list!

How about "Black Test Car", the quasi-companion piece to "G & T"? I would also suggest Laurent Cantet's quietly devastating "Human Resources".
