Hiroshi Shimizu, ranked

By: Jon K

I’ve only watched these once each but heres my order:

Children in the Wind
Ornamental Hairpin
Four Seasons of Children
Children of the Beehive
The Masseurs and a Woman
Mr. Thank You
Introspection Tower
Mr. Shosuke Ohara
Nobuko
Eternal Heart/Undying Pearl
Japanese Girls at the Harbor
Notes of an Itinerant Performer

Shimizu directed many, many films in his life but most are thought to be lost.

Some of the surviving films are available on region 1 DVD. Some are available on Asian DVD import. Some of the rarer movies are avaiable for download on “Surrealmoviez.info” but I am not sure of the copyright situation.

Picture of Holyphool Holyphool 17Aug10 Hiroshi Shimizu "Forget Love for Now" (1937) Another SHIMIZU last night in the arctic storm raging outside ...one of the absolutely most beautiful...simple, sad story of a young boy and his prostitute/bar girl mother in Yokohoma, and how the boy gets castigated by his school friends for his mother's moral position... as usual in Shimizu, beautifully observed scenes of such tenderness, contrasted with hilarious dance hall scenes, lonely wandering thru misty alleyways with plaintive clarinet, and fog, with a potential suitor falling in love with the mother, but never realising. The final sacrifice of the boy - dying for his mother, is amazing ....print quality not the best, with time code...but the film is so powerful it transcends all.....

There's also a Japanese region 2 box with 4 films and english subtitles. It's a bit expensive, I got it for 9000 yen at the time in Japan, which was then about 80 euro's, but the artwork is amazing. It contains Children in the Wind, Nobuko, Introspection Tower and Four Seasons of Children, so at least two masterpieces and two lesser works.
