"I SHALL WRITE A BOOK SOME DAY ABOUT THE APPROPRIATENESS OF NAMES"

By: Antoine Doinel

This is a collection of short films that are all named after (or allude to) a character in the film, more often than not they are named after a female character (perhaps because these films were predominantly made by men, French men!), in many ways the films are cinematic odes to the characters/actors/people they are about … and in some cases the names have been ‘immortalized’ by the filmmakers.

Geneviéve Bujold in “Geneviéve” (1964)

Nadja Tesich in “Nadja in Paris” (1964)

Jean-Pierre Léaud and Marie-France Pisier in “Antoine et Colette” (1962)

The following films are not currently in database:

ISABELLE AUX DOMBES (1951) Dir: Maurice Pialat

GENEVIÉVE (1964) Dir: Michel Brault, with Geneviéve Bujold! – Part of the portmanteau film “La fleur de l’âge”

MARIE-FRANCE ET VÉRONIQUE (1964) Dir: Jean Rouch – Part of the portmanteau film “La fleur de l’âge”

BEPPIE (1965) Dir: Johan van der Keuken

ANNIE (1969) Dir: Phil Niblock

L’ILYA (2000) Dir: Tomoya Sato

the list is compiled by date and is a work in progress, please feel free to suggest others:

Just a note: "White Morning" should be called "Ako" (named after main female character), and was also part of the portmanteau film “La fleur de l’âge” (1964).
