Italian Romanticism

By: Judicial Joe

romanticism |rōˈmantəˌsizəm, rə-|

noun

1 (often Romanticism )a movement in the arts and literature that originated in the late 18th century, emphasizing inspiration, subjectivity, and the primacy of the individual.

Romanticism was a reaction against the order and restraint of classicism and neoclassicism, and a rejection of the rationalism that characterized the Enlightenment. In music, the period embraces much of the 19th century, with composers including Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, and Wagner. Poets exemplifying the movement include Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats; among romantic painters are such stylistically diverse artists as William Blake, J. M. W. Turner, Delacroix, and Goya.

2 the state or quality of being romantic: a quality of romanticism about women that leads to the creation of a pipe-dream fantasy.

Italian Romanticism is the style of film practiced in Italy primarily from 1954 (the year of Visconti’s Senso) to 1975 (the year of Pasolini’s Salo). The movement was concerned with narratives that were based on mythological, classical, literary or historical sources, utilizing extremely elaborate mise-en-scene, often in color, to convey the inner bipolarity of their characters and the existential irrationality that pervaded the films’ settings.

LOL. Good point, but eras in film don't necessarily coincide with eras in literature.

Seeing Anan Magnani, might Renoir's Golden Coach count?

Visconti films had struck me as fitting the bill; directors like Fellini less so- this list gives me food for thought with its interesting outlook/classification. Which Fellini, Pasolini, Antonioni films in particular do you see as romantic?
