Japanese Cinema of the 1930's

By: Frank W

The 1930’s were an extremely productive period for Japanese cinema with a highlight of 562 films made in 1937. Unfortunately, many of these films were lost in war bombings and only a small number of these films have been found and restored. To give you an idea of the great loss; of the 1249 films made at Shochiku Kamata between 1920 and 1936, only 50 films remain. Of that enormous amount of films made in the 1930’s this is only a small list made out of films I’ve seen and the ones I’ve yet to watch.

There's a new Shimazu film on Mubi. First Steps Ashore (1932); I haven't seen it but it looks very interesting.

Excellent list! I've seen 29 Japanese movies from the 20's/30's and you have pointed me in the direction of several others I need to check out. Thanks! Sadly, a lot of them will be difficult to track down...
