A list that reminds me how many awesome Japanese films there are. Although Nausicaa above Ugetsu Monogatari sticks in the throat a bit :)
Hi -- I wonder if anyone here can help. I'd like to re-watch a movie that I saw a long time ago. I don't know the title and only have the vaguest recollection of one scene from the movie -- I just remember that I thought it was great. All I remember is that it was in color and it ended with a huge fire in a time period where all the women were wearing kimono. So vague, I know, but maybe that's enough for someone here?
great list to take as a referrence, but rashomon on 28th? i guess it must be random ordering...
It's great to see "Floating Clouds" at #5. Could use a couple more Naruse films near the top. Thanks for sharing.
Really ? I couldn’t find the Girl Who Leapt Through Time version I was searching for. I’m gonna check this out, thanks Myra.
Thanks for this list! You'll find that quite a few films from the 2009 poll have recently been added on the site. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Devil's Ballad and Proxy War are already in the database. :)
Ah, it must have been another KJ poll Sansho missed out on
Update!
@Kenji : Sansho is on the list… but pretty down.
This list is just what the studios pride themselves on. Very little presence from non-hegemonic productions.
No Sansho the Bailiff! Like a list of Italian paintings that leaves out the Sistine Chapel
Super liste... J'adore... merci.
Why "Ikiru" is not on the list??
This is very interesting, thank you very much! I have found the top 200 by the critics but I am very interested in individual ballots (Japanese and foreign choices) by famous personalities in order to include them in *They Shoot Pictures, Don't They?*
Could you help us?
I like more this list than the Kinema Jumpo list.
Eureka is in the top 200 (rank 135...) but a way behind Hula girl (52) or Always (67)... That's kind painful lol.
You're right about Hula Girls, it was awful....can't believe it won best picture that year! I 'm surprised Eureka didn't make it either.
Acerk21 >> Yeah... especially when you see flicks like "Hula girls" or "Orodu daisousasen" in the whole list. But Iwai Shunji isn't the only one people tend to forget: Aoyama Shinji, Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Kore'eda... even Ozu isn't fairly represented in this ranking.
Lists are always subjective anyway hehe.
I still can't believe All About Lily Chou Chou didn't make the cut!
Thanks for taking the time and effort for posting this, I love seeing lists from other nations that shed some light on their own thought process. Plus you never know what hidden gems may turn up.
