Again, great list!
My name is derived from Black Lizard(cuz Japanese only use r pronouciation in l). Yukio Mishima and Ranpo Edogawa are great!
Kenji (and everyone who is interested in Japanese film),
I am going to teach a five-week summer class for American students with the title "Love in the Japanese Film." So I am looking for about 15 representative films that are about love (as in falling in love), but also familial/domestic love (as in love between family members, parents, children, siblings) and also love in a more general term (for example love for the country). Could you suggest some films that I could include in this list?

Thank you very much for the work you've put into this. I can't think of a better resource on the subject. Best regards.
this is a new world for me
Japanese cinema in the white-boy territory.
this reminds me of my school's Japanese Studies department.
I want to watch all of these. Like, all of these. My own Japan list is tiny as hell, but, man, if I can find the time and the energy... :D It's a very great list, Kenji. Thank you. :)

Fantastic article/list. I'm also grateful that you've included a link to my anime list; I greatly appreciate it.
Now here is an excellent article/list and with rare good taste (Mizoguchi, Naruse, Ozu, Shimizu, Shimazu). Thanks you. Must confess to little interest in films beyond 1960.
Ah, well spotted! I had intended it on the longer list but forgot. The main list is longer than originally planned too.
Goodness gracious. Am not familiar with so many of these titles but for the more celebrated - so promising a list, with life being so short...
Is K. Shindo's 'Yabu No Naka No Kurunako' (1968) on here, somewhere? A bit more overrun, I understand.
For the moment. it's on the longer list above, it's hard not to let the main list get overrun.
Is Empire of Passion on there? I have recently seen this film and enjoyed it thoroughly! You might consider it.
Nice I found your list kenj, thanks for sharing with us
Thank you for this. As someone who has only embarked on a journey into Japanese film in the last 3 years or so, and has fallen in love with it, this will keep me busy (gladly) and dicovering for a while.
One of the best lists I've come across by far. Thanks.
Well, your list put me on to quite a lot i'd left out, forgotten or not seen
This is a fantastic reference.
great list! i'm using it as my guide to japanese cinema.
Always a nice reference list. Good to see some more contemporary cinema on there as well.

Well, i'm very pleased to hear it, thanks
Yes, i've got it on my Pussies Galore and Films with Animals lists, but is it worthy of a place here?
No, i've not seen them all, having changed from favourites to longer list of essentials. Thanks for the suggestions
Have you seen most/all of these? Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (Misumi) could make this list. and Tokyo Trials (Kobayashi) is a must whenever they add it to the site...
Well, you're keeping me busy!.
This is certainly a list I will likely refer back to in the future at least a few times.
I was tempted to pick Eureka in the semi or the final, just the length with the time for viewing was a problem
