Collective socio-religious-patriarchal governmental mental illness.
Marco Bellocchio's 'L'Ora di Religione (Il Sorriso di Mia Madre)' is another perfect fit.
Brilliant list. I appreciate your discussion of mental health both as a social worker and an avid film aficionado.
Great list! How about PTA - Boogie Nights, TWBB, Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia?
I find it interesting that you consider religion and political hysteria to be mental illnesses. Some good films on this list, I'll be referring to it to back up my opinion that A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE is inaccurate in depicting bipolar disorder.
http://mubi.com/films/35559 Hey this film has nothing to do with mental illness :D
I was thinking of creating a psychology-themed list 'til I saw this [which covers much more than I would've hoped,] so I decided to fan this instead. ;) <p>I might suggest including some others like Let There Be Light, Rope, Moby Dick, Last Year at Marienbad, Reflections in a Golden Eye, The Story of Adele H., Eyes Wide Shut and The Century of the Self [of course, some might fall under more general psychology than mental illness.]
I find it kind of shocking that a list about mental illness managed to surpass the fanbase of my Greek cinematography collection but I shouldn't wonder so much since the same can be said to the unknown cultures Cyclo / Kuxa is trying to promote. (all that regardless of the great quality of the said list)
not in the 'mubi' database - THE JACKET (‘05) – John Maybury - HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (’99) – William Malone - KING OF HEARTS (‘66) – Philippe de Broca - GOTHIKA (’03) – Mathieu Kassovitz - SHADDOW PUPPETS (‘07) – Michael Winnick - THE FORGOTTEN (’73) – S.F. Brownrigg - THE MAGICIAN (‘26) – Rex Ingram - NEO NED (’05) – Van Fischer - I'M A CYBORG, BUT THAT'S OK ('06) - Chan-wook Park - QUILLS ('00) - Philip Kaufman
Attenborough's Christie seemed terrifyingly sane to me, a master manipulator if ever there was one, whilst Evans seemed sadly delusional. I do agree though that state is the real crazy. And a pair of Michael Redgrave suggestions, how about Dead of Night and or Secret Beyond the Door?
Well, it could be a continuum- which one of us is fully sane?- but i think bumping women off marks Christie as more mentally ill than Evans, who had a low I.Q but was less depraved. Capital punishment and the kiling of inncoent people by the state may also be a form of mental illness. In Monsieur Verdoux like Chaplin i take the state as more ill than serial killer Verdoux.
Is the 10 Rillington Place inclusion based on the John Hurt character or do you see Christie as mentally ill?
I would suggest "L'Ora di Religione" and "Vincere", by Marco Bellocchio. You did an awesome job!
