My Voyage to Italy – Checklist

By: Drew Gregory

As A Personal Journey introduced me to silent cinema (among other things), My Voyage to Italy introduced me to “foreign” cinema.

Scorsese allowed me to cross the American border, using Fellini, Rossellini, and Antonioni as his tools.

I really have seen very little from this list, due to the rarity of many of these titles. Instead I was forced to branch out on my own seeing the Italian films that interested me most, based on the directors that this doc exposed me to. Now that I am a bit craftier at finding rare films, I figured I would go back and try to see all of the films discussed in this film.

Cabiria (1914)
What Scoundrels Men Are! (1932)
Gesuzza the Garibaldian Wife (1934)
The Lower Depths (1936)
Fantasia sottomarina (1940)
La corona di ferro (1941)
The White Ship (1942)
Ossessione (1943)
Rome, Open City (1945)*

It depends how you're reading it. If you think I mean download then, no, that is not what I meant. :)

Well, Scorsese would certainly give a good grounding in the classics and some less known oldies! For some post 60s stuff, try the Taviani brothers, eg Night of the Shooting Stars. Senso is my favourite by Visconti. Renoir is for me the father of Italian neo-realism, but more through Toni than Les Bas-Fonds. Fabiola and Bells of Coronado i don't know.

Drew, I can't wait until you see all of those films! I bet you'll have quite the knowledge on those films when you do! At least you're looking for them, too, because some people don't even try that hard... Savvy
