I like movies about nuns. some of them are scary. some of them are sweet. most are good. some are bad. it’s a strange dichotomy.

It’s a work in progress. Suggest ones if you would like. I’m trying to stay away from the exploitation films unless they’re already in the MUBI database. Thanks!

A Question of Habit features interviews with more than 30 religious women, cultural critics, historians, and artists. The film, which is narrated by Susan Sarandon, explores the “nature, scope, and significance” of nuns and why they are so prevalent in our culture. The storyline dives into lives of the religious women in the United States “from the battle field medics of the Civil War to the creators of the first HMO in the country to the political activists fighting against capital punishment,” according to a description on the film’s website.

Rivette's "The Nun" is a masterpiece, controversial during its time. Although it's considered to be "traditional" compared to Rivette's other films, it's probably his most compassionate and deeply humane. Anna Karina shows a different facet of her talent and beauty as a young woman forced into the nunnery. She is ably supported by Micheline Presle as a saintly mother superior and Liselotte Pulver as a lesbian one. Fred Zinnemann's "The Nun's Story" is just as amazing, centered on Audrey Hepburn's finest dramatic performance.
