Personal Mumblecore List

By: Celeryfc

An ever updated ranking of my favourite films of the loosely defined film movement, ‘Mumblecore’.

This list has increased in populatory, and I figured it would make sense to include here a list of films that can be called ‘Mumblecore’, but I have not seen. This will be listed in date order. Please feel free to bring other films to my attention if they are not listed here! Also, disagree if you feel any films listed are not ‘Mumblecore’!

By the way, that is 6 Joe Swanberg films in 2011…

The Guatemalan Handshake – Todd Rohal (2006)
In Search of a Midnight Kiss – Alex Holdridge (2007)
The Freebie – Katie Aselton (2010)
Tiny Furniture – Lena Dunham (2010)
Autoerotic – Joe Swanberg / Adam Wingard (2011)
Art History – Joe Swanberg (2011)
Your Sister’s Sister – Lynn Shelton (2011)
The Zone – Joe Swanberg (2011)
Caitlin Plays Herself – Joe Swanberg (2011)
V/H/S – Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Ti West, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg, Radio Silence (2012)
Privacy Setting – Joe Swanberg (2012)
Sun Don’t Shine – Amy Seimetz (2012)
Open Five 2 – Kentucker Audley (2012)
Computer Chess – Andrew Bujalski (2012)
All The Lights in the Sky – Joe Swanberg (2012)
Drinking Buddies – Joe Swanberg (2013)
Touchy Feely – Lynn Shelton

Seems like I've got some disagreement with Mutual Appreciation, so let me attempt to explain myself. When watching it, I didn't feel as connected with it at as I did with any of the other Bujalski films (all 2 of them...!). This for me is vital, especially in these types of film, as they are often extremely true to life, and although I felt that the lead character could exist (and more than likely does), it felt a little...flat to me. There are some stand-out moments (wig party, and the concert that I thought was fantastically filmed), but they were too far between. Dont get me wrong, I still really like the film, but it is the weakest for me. Im also glad to see that you are interested in 'Frownland', as I firmly believe its one of the best films of the last decade. Its still Mumblecore in many ways, but its almost...extreme-Mumblecore! You'll understand if you watch it, but its not for the light-hearted! If you enjoy 'Frownland', I would suggest trying 'Yeast', a film by the directors wife.

Not sure about your ranking, I personally find Mutual Appreciation to be one of the best in the genre. Needless to say, you've now put Frownland on my radar.
