sorry to double post but i wonder if you have any thoughts on the inclusion of a few powell and pressburger films in this list. it's probably the first time i've seen a few crop up. i say this because i remember in 2008 cahiers du cinema's top 100 list didn't have any british films on it. in the past i think some french critics thought british cinema was mediocre because we didn't conjure any self-validating genres like the western or the thriller (both from america, obviously) and that ours wasn't an auteur cinema because our films weren't saying anything about life.

I'm pleased with the Powell-Pressburger inclusions. In the past i've been quite critical of British cinema but the French aversion is completely o.t.t. There are plenty of goodies to be found and recent years have been a strong patch.

just had a quick look over this. must say, it's a pretty damn good list. i should be sacked from being a cinephile, however, as i've only seen around 27 :O. 22 in age at the moment so there is a lot of time to watch the ones i haven't seen. merci, kenji :D

Happy viewing! It's a pretty good round up of the established classics- lots of interesting and less famous choices that failed to make the cut. I may add some more. I've done another, longer, list The European Canon, if you're interested.

Imperfect (as it so happens with these lists) but interesting since I've yet to watch plenty of its titles.
