RANKING SCORSESE

By: Øyvind Rype

Scorsese was one of the first directors that helped me to notice that film was something more than borrowing what was new at the gas station. For that reason he’s always had a special place in my cinephile heart but it took me some 12 years to go through his feature filmography. From Taxi Driver, most likely my favorite film of all time to Boxcar Bertha, one of the worst from a later established director — his career output is indeed varied.

Impressive work. I've not gotten around to watching all of Scorsese's features yet, but this inspired me to get back to that once-started project. Surprised though to see "Bringing Out the Dead" and "The Aviator" this low on the ranking... but I know I'm in the minority on at least "The Aviator".

Thanks. It's fun going through a filmography like this. Some films feel like a chore to get through but you sort of wait for that golden nugget that makes the entire "job" worthwhile. After Hours is definetely one of the nuggets I got ahold in watching the films systematically. Aviator was good but forgettable and Bringing... I don't know. Maybe it suffers too much in (my) comparison with the similar-themed Taxi Driver.
