Recommendations from Auteurs

By: Jazzaloha

This is a list of recommendations I received from participants on auteurs. Feel free to give me recommendations. But don’t get mad if I don’t see them. :)

Apu’s picks for “canon challengers”:
Brick and Mirror (better than Taxi Driver)
Batang Westside

Movies I’ve seen from the list:

White Material. Didn’t get what the bid deal was. (49/100)
Los Muertos. I liked it OK, but it’s a solid film (70/100)
The Headless Woman I really like the visuals; the story/idea, just so-so. (68/100)
In the City of Sylvia (75/100) I liked this quite a bit
World of Suzie Wong (can’t remember what I rated this)
Pale Flower (probably 73/100)
Ghost Ship (73/100; thoughtful horror)
Isle of the Dead (73/100; ditto)
The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (69/100)
Distant (73/100)

The following films are on netflix streaming:
Distant
Irene in Time
Deja Vu (Henry Jaglom)
How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman
In the City of Sylvia

Hi Jazz, I do not wish to add any more films to your growing list, so I'll recommend some of these listed as "top priority". Among them, Marketa Lazarova and Extraordinary Stories, both in my all-time top 100. :) I think just by reading the synopsis of Oxhide (which I happen to admire) will kind of determine whether you'd enjoy it or not.

No, I appreciate the feedback! I've been wanting to see Marketa Lazarova for a long time, but this will motivate me more. Several other people have recommended *Extraordinary Stories* and *Oxhide*, but they're not easy films to get a hold of, unfortunately.

Some very good films here, I think. I would especially second Khutsiyev's "I Am Twenty" (though I also like "July Rain"), "Mr. Lăzărescu", "Pale Flower" and Masumura's "Giants & Toys". :)

Thanks for the feedback. That will definitely influence how I prioritize the above. By the way, Lazarescu is often cited as one of the better films of the 2000s. Do you agree with that?

I think so. But If I were you, I woudn't pay too much attention to that right now. Undue expectations can negatively affect how one views and judges a film. To me there are many Romanian new wave films that are just as good. :)

Re: high expectations. It's a little late for that. :) Please do recommend any Romanian films you think I should see. (I've seen *4 Months*.)

I understand. :) I'm also a big fan of "Police, Adjective", ostensibly a low-key procedural but one with wide-ranging repercussions. Also, Radu Muntean's three relatively neglected films, "The Paper Will Be Blue", "Boogie" and "Tuesday, After Christmas".

OK, thanks. I'll look for these. (Btw, I started watching *Police, Adjective*, but I wasn't able to finish it--not because of any failing on the film's part.)
