Sorry to say, i didn't like Shoeshine :(
ultimate list ! my recommendation for this list would be children underground (2001) by Edet Belzberg
I would heartily second Martinus' choice of SAMMY GOING SOUTH (in its uncut glory, not in the brutally edited version titled A BOY TEN FEET TALL). I also have a great liking for the two anti-Disney Hayley Mills British films, TIGER BAY (J. Lee Thompson, 1959) and WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND (Bryan Forbes, 1961). And I would be remiss not to mention the three child protagonists in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (Robert Mulligan, 1962).
Whisper of the Heart (Yoshifumi Kondo, 1995) is, for me, the greatest film about childhood and one of the greatest films ever made. Here warmth and longing mingle in a way made pure and honest by its innocence.
I recommend THE MAGNET (Charles Frend, 1950), with eleven year old James Fox in the leading role. Also three Alexander Mackendrick movies, who was a great director of children: MANDY (1952) (MUBI should use another picture of that movie), A HIGH WIND IN JAMAICA (1965) and one I rank very high on my wishlist SAMMY GOING SOUTH (1963).
I would have liked to see: - The Year my Parents Went on Vacation -- O Ano em Que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias (2006) and - Blame it on Fidel! -- La faute à Fidel! (2006) on this list. Other candidates could have been Let the Right One In, Pan's Labyrinth and maybe Show me Love
