Maybe the best list on MUBI I've seen so far.

I recommend Nueve Reinas/Nine Queens for an Argentine movie. BTW I like your flags & tables.

No Argentine favorite? I suppose you have yet to see "Historias extraordinarias" for the cup. And as Tsai fan I think that Alonso's films should be to your liking, he also made a Tsai homage with "Fantasma". Looking forward to the remaining choices.

I haven't seen Historias extraordinarias yet, but based on the almost unanamous love for it, I'll be surprised if it doesn't go up on this list after I've seen it. I've seen Alonso's Fantasma and didn't like it, but I actually expect I might like his other stuff. I hope after the World Cup my list here will fill out a lot more.

I don't think it lives up to "Goodbye Dragon Inn" either and probably isn't his strongest work, but I really liked its portrayal of the Argentine cinemateque where I've spent countless hours. Lucas Granero also wrote a brilliant analysis which made me appreciate the film even more (http://mubi.com/topics/cinema-21-lisandro-alonso). Alonso's most accomplished film may be "Liverpool" as far as I'm concerned, but "The Dead" is also an impressive film. Besides, if you're in the mood for classic Argentine films I suggest to take a look at Leonardo Favio's body of work.

And I forgot to mention, there are certainly contextual devices regarding Alonso's first two films that enhance the viewing experience of "Fantasma". The film may seem pointless when seen on its own, but the displacement of the protagonists and the spatial divergence (city-countryside) becomes striking when you watch it after "Liberty" and "The Dead".

Yes, I have heard that and that's why I'd like to watch the rest of his film and then revisit Fantasma.
