Rockumentaries/Concert Films

By: Langston Young

I’m not particularly a big fan of the rockumentary, though many on this list have several fascinating moments. I watched all of these films except Stop Making Sense in a class I took this Summer on Rock-N-Roll in films. This is an on going list, though I doubt I’ll see many more in the future. The Last Waltz takes the #1 spot based off of the talent involved.

Would No Direction Home qualify? The Scorsese Rockumentary about Bob Dylan?

Ha, Woodstock was pretty good, it could take over the #1 spot here eventually. Stop Making Sense and The Last Waltz were definitely leaps forward in the concert film, very polished looking and we barely see the audience. I haven't seen the new Honore, but I'm interested now.

Damn me. Not one of these. I watched parts of Woodstock but I feel like dancing and then I stop looking at the screen. All great films tho (canon says). Must watch them all one of these days. I too prefer a Live Event rather than the actual depiction of a concert but boy are some music docs well shot/edited/framed huh? Have you seen the new Honoré? The drummer shots? Amazing editing too.

ha, nah I haven't as yet, but it sounds interesting. Yea some of the films even if you can't enjoy the music, are pretty interesting.

We always can enjoy the music. There's always that but at times I feel like it's "a band" playing live and not a FILM about a band playing live. My point. Although as a gig-goer i love how some of that footage was shot. I mean I sure as hell could not stay cool if thom yorke or alice glass was playing. I'd leave the camera be and i'd loose my shit. Just sayin' And the bands on these docs damn. It's hard feeling the music and dancing to it and filming it. We have to choose. God bless for the film-makers that can do that but me as a music lover tend to enjoy the concert-ish side of the endeavor and loose myself on the actual songs (as if they were video-clips stacked together) rather than enjoy the film-making skills or the textures or the editing or the camera movement etc etc
