When do we start arguing about Shutter Island and Hugo?

when you rank scorsese and explain to me how shutter island and hugo are better than any of the above films. i actually think shuttter island is pretty good, but man is that acting questionable. its just plain questionable, the whole movie. its the first time he tried a horror tone since cape fear and cape fear is a FAR more focused film. incredibly well acted and over the top to just the right degree. also cape fear was a personal film. he related this story to Catholicism, morality and sex like he always does. shutter island, in comparison, is a pathetic excuse to make a pretty looking B movie about some uninteresting detective's descent into madness. not a failure of a film, but IMO has no meat compared to the other films. and hugo on the other hand also had its moments. sacha baron cohen was great as was the adorable chloe moretz, but the plot was striaght up boring. i was expecting an adventure filled with imagination. they went from the movies to the train station to the house. what a snoozefest. i hate self-referential films most of the time. love letter to cinema my ass-- it was a film preservation PSA. also, the film went down a notch once i found out george millies is a real guy. i thought they made up all that cool stuff with the "trip to the moon" but no! apparently no creativity or imagination went into it, just blah blah blah about how great movies are. i know how good movies are... why the fuck would i be watching a scorsese movie otherwise?

ya. its a flawed film, but ive some nostalgia for it. i mean, the majesty of raging bull and taxi driver is undeniable, and those films are nearly flawless, but i just love the style of color of money- all the tension between the three leads. ill be honest, I saw The Hustler when I was little and could only appreciate a couple scenes. i gotta rewatch that SOON. I just dont think the comparison is even valid. I dont even consider it a sequel. It's about a different part of Eddie Felson's life... the spirit of the film is completely different.

Surprised you liked The Color of Money so much. It's hands down my least liked film by Scorsese to date and pales in comparison, I believe, to The Hustler.

watched the hustler. thought it was fantastic... just made me appreciate Color of Money more :D.... its hard to top the Hustler for what it is which is one of the best dramas ive seen from that era, but i think Scorsese did a pretty graceful job of making a "sequel." and its ballsy too... thats like making a sequel to lolita or streetcar named desire or something... takes a lot of balls.
