An interesting sidelight on The Age of Innocence which I consider one of the greats. In spite of the superbly researched and executed Sets, costumes, food, and manners of the time, there is one anachronistic area: my ex-wife is quite an expert on "old" roses and observed that those in the film are breeds that didn't exist at the time. This seems to be a universal failing of movies, but she is a tolerant rosarian and still loved this one.
One that I like, which is quite stagey, is Keisuke Kinoshita's 1958 'Ballad of Narayama'. Here are a few screens to illustrate my point. (didn't fit in this comment box). I'm yet to see Imamura's more famous '83 version.
