Sidney Lumet

By: Jaspar Lamar Crabb

We’ve forumed about this so I thought I’d make a list. The LATE Lumet infuriated me sometimes (GLORIA) but for the most part, I think he was the best director of his generation (A. Penn; F. Schaffner; J. Frankenheimer; N. Jewison)

The Pawnbroker
Fail Safe
The Hill
Long Days Journey into Night
Dog Day Afternoon
Serpico

Most Underrated:
Daniel
Q&A
Bye Bye Braverman
The Morning After
Night Falls on Manhattan

Most Overrated:
The Verdict

The Worst:
Gulity as Sin
Gloria
Family Business

Nearly Impossible to Sit Through:
The Deadly Affair
The Wiz
Equus
Power

Most Fun:
The Anderson Tapes
Murder on the Orient Express

Just Tell Me What You Want

Most Sublime:
The Fugitive Kind
Child’s Play
The Offence
That Kind of Woman

thanks for The Morning After reminder...a not so great movies, but with an exceptional Jane Fonda peformance. And Raul Julia was quite nasty (once you realized what he was up to)

Sidney was the first director i discovered on my own, and i was always a fan. Remembering Just Tell Me What you Want brought a smile to my face, thanks for remembering it. Havent seen many of the early ones but i generally agree with yout list. It's a shame about some of his howlers, like the Wiz and Equus because Sid loved the stage so much, but i'm not sure anyone could have made decent films from that group, They're too theatrical. One standout in The Wiz was the No Bad News number. One missing from your list is The Morning After, an LA film from the 80's. Not great but about average. RIP Sid, you were one of the really good ones.

I watch 3 Lumet's films. Before the devil Know you're dead (my favorite), Dog day afternoon and The Verdict (yes overrated).

The Nearly Impossible to sit through were well-made, had great casts, got some decent reviews, but are deadly dull. The Worst...those are VERY bad movies
