Sisters Are Doing it For Themselves: Independent Women on Film

By: Cameron Bryant

I recently sat down and watched Jeanne Dielman. After sitting there for the nearly 3 and a half hours, I was entranced. This was an excellent film and it stayed with me for days. It kept popping into my mind at the most random times. It inspired me to collate a list of my favourite films depicting independent women as the central characters. So often, mainstream movies tend to relegate the woman to the background or put her in a partnership with her male co-star. Women are used as accessories to “compliment” the male actor or the scenario. In these films, women are centre-stage and are independent of men. Here are my favourites, starting with one of the best.

Great suggestions. I have not yet had the pleasure of seeing The Passion of Joan of Arc- though I loved Day of Wrath, so I am looking forward to other Dreyer works.

2 Mizoguchi films not yet on site: My Love has been Burning, The Love of Sumako the Actress. How about some Dreyer, e.g Gertrud, Passion of Joan of Arc, Rivette's Jeanne la Pucelle..

Gabrielle is a beautiful film. Isabelle Huppert can do no wrong in my books, but this was certainly one of her best performances.

Gabrielle directed by Chereau is an outstanding film with another brilliant performance by Huppert.
