Soju in the Cinema: The Oeuvre of Hong Sangsoo, Ranked!

By: Sean John

In my honest opinion, the greatest living director in the world today. Hopefully more people will start referring to his films when they think of contemporary Korean cinema.

When is he ever going to make a bad film?

Thanks for this, I needed this for a future discourse on Hong's cinema, I fell in love with Woman Is the Future of Man and Kangwon Province, I can't wait to check the much talked Turning Gate and Virgin Stripped Bare.

Oki's Movie is my top of this year! Since I came to Korea, every year I see Hong's works 5 times in theatre. But this year is 6 times. Hahaha 3 times, Oki's Movie 3 times. OH! KISS MOVIE~ My favourite Hong's work is also turning gate.

Yes, I could probably raise Night & Day a notch above Woman is the Future of Man, but I'm not quite convinced its better than any of the top 4 I've listed. I've only seen it once, so who knows, I may change my mind after another viewing. Highbrow it may be (although I think that's a rather dubious claim), but few films have affected me more emotionally than Turning Gate; Hong at his most erotic.

I second Arsaib. I just saw Night and Day a week or so ago, and it is definitely my favorite, but it makes sense why highbrow fans would Turning Gate - much more aesthetically pleasing.
