Star Trek films, ranked

By: Miasma

Really? Has nobody else done this?

My own personal preference.

I really love TNG, but the TNG films are crap.
I’ve never seen a single episode of the original series.
I would very much have liked to see a DS9 movie, but it wouldn’t have made a dollar (unless, of course, they worked hard to actually make it a good film, but there’s no incentive for them there).

For more unabashed Trek geekery, one can always visit the post on my blog.

Combined with budgets and worldwide grosses as per Boxofficemojo.com…

1 Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Cost: $35 million
Domestic gross: $82

2 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Cost: $11 million (jeez)
Domestic gross: $78

3 Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Cost: ?
World gross: $96

4 Star Trek (2009)
Cost: $150 million
World gross: $385 million

5 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Cost: ?
Domestic gross: $109

6 Star Trek: First Contact
Cost: ?
World gross: $146 million

7 Star Trek: Nemesis
Cost: $60 million
World gross: $67 million

8 Star Trek: Insurrection
Cost: $58 million
World gross: $112 million

9 Star Trek: Generations

World gross: $118 million

10 Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
Cost: ?
Domestic gross: $76 million

Never seen any of the Original Series? Sorry dude, you're geekery credentials have been revoked.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you. Did you say you liked my list?

Well, there's a certain camp value to all that. That's the impression I get, at least. Doesn't my liking the first Trek film above all others balance out my ignorance?

There is certainly a great deal of camp in the original series, mostly due to the low budgets and special effects. However, it was a show that employed some great sci-fi writers so the ideas and themes are pretty amazing and challenging. You should definitely find the time to check them out. I do like your list, though I don't agree with your rankings. First off, I wouldn't call you ignorant by any means. If I did, I would have to be doubly ignorant due to my minimal knowledge of TNG and DS9, though I do like both those shows. My ranks would go: Wrath of Kahn, Star Trek, Search for Spock, Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, The Motion Picture, Nemisis, First Contact, Insurrection, Generations, and The Final Frontier. Regardless of differences, it's nice to see someone else who loves Trek here. My own desire to become more of geek has me watching The Animated Series currently. Last, I'd just like to say it was nice to meet you in person yesterday. Sorry if I seemed a little out of it. I've been working 12-14 hours for the past few days, getting to sleep around midnight, and up at 5 with the my 2 year old son. Hopefully we can meet again sometime when I'm more rested. Enjoy the rest of the festival, I hope you see some more stuff you like.
